The 2020 Volvo XC90: Many Options, More Luxury

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury crossover that carries on Volvo’s tradition of robust vehicles with advanced efficiency and power. It consistently stands up to the competition and provides new innovations, especially with engine technologies. Here, we compare it to the BMW X5.

First off, the Volvo XC90 is offered at a much lower price than the X5. You can get a very well-equipped XC90 for $61,500, whereas an X5 starts at $73,500.

The 2020 Volvo XC90 is most efficient with a palette of power

Multiple advanced engines power the XC90’s trims, including all-gasoline and hybrid systems. The T5 AWD engine with 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque is available in the Momentum trim. It achieves a fuel consumption rating of 11.2/8.3 L/100 km (city/highway), which is the best rating out of all gasoline engines offered in the XC90 and BMW X5. The gasoline AWD turbocharged T6 with 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque is found in all trims except the PHEV.

The BMW X5 offers two gasoline engines. The xDrive40i includes a turbocharged six-cylinder that has a slightly higher horsepower rating at 335, but you’ll pay more at the pump with its 11.7/9.1 L/100 km (city/highway) fuel consumption rating, and it’s less efficient than the XC90’s T5 and PHEV powertrains. The X5’s M50i is a performance edition that maximizes fuel consumption with a 14.5/10.7 L/100 km rating and includes a substantial MSRP sticker price of $92,498.

The 2020 Volvo XC90 also wins the hybrid battle

The XC90’s T8 Twin Engine is found in the PHEV trim and combines the high performance of a gasoline engine and electric motor to produce low emissions and the highest horsepower of the XC90 lineup. Both motors generate a net 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque, but they also make the XC90 one of the most efficient SUVs in its class at 9.1/8.4 L/100 km (city/highway).

BMW recently introduced the X5 PHEV, but with 330 horsepower, 335 lb-ft of torque, and a fuel consumption rating of 11.7/9.1 L/100 km, it stands well behind the XC90’s PHEV.

The interior of the XC90 offers an increase in cargo volume behind the middle row compared to the X5, exceeding it by up to 59 litres. There is much more to discover with the Volvo XC90’s interior and more.
