A quick guide for your Volvo’s winter tires

We're getting closer to winter, so it's time to think about winter tires. There's no better time than now, but we know you've got questions about which winter tires are right for your Volvo, when to install them, or if they need to be replaced. Our quick guide answers some frequently asked questions about Volvo tires including the questions we are sure you have. Our goal is to help you determine when you should install your winter tires, and how to determine if you need new winter tires. When you are ready, give our tire centre a call. We'll be happy to help you find the right winter tires for your Volvo.

What's the best time to get winter tires for my Volvo?

It's a good idea to put on winter tires now given the colder weather we are experiencing, specifically in the morning and in the evening. As a result, if you're still driving on summer or all-season tires, they'll harden and lose grip, as well as being less effective when braking. Even if there's no snow or ice on the road yet, you still would enjoy better handling and more effective braking performance with proper winter tires. And when the snow does come, you'll be happy to have proper winter tires on your vehicle.

How can I check if I need new winter tires?

To find out if your winter tires are still usable and effective, measure the tread depth. Winter tires should have at least 4.8 mm of tread to last you all winter. Your tires won't last until spring if they have tread depth under 4.8 mm and if they get to 4.0 mm, they won't be as effective on slippery roads. Ultimately, many of our clients decide to put winter tires on their Volvo well before their current winter tires reach 5.0 mm of tread depth.

Do I need winter wheels to go with my winter tires?

By getting winter wheels, you'll protect your summer wheels, which are more expensive to replace. Furthermore, if you get winter wheels for your Volvo, you can reduce the size of your winter tires by an inch which will help you save money down the road on your winter tires.
