Volvo's Electric Vehicles Gain Momentum with Enhanced Range in Canada

Volvo Car Canada propels forward in the electric vehicle sector with an upgrade to its fully electric C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge models. Introduced for the 2024 model year, two new powertrains deliver enhanced range and improved charging capabilities.
In a first for Volvo's Canadian operations, the addition of fully-electric rear-wheel drive variants offers improved range without compromising safety and secure driving dynamics. The in-house developed second-generation permanent magnet electric motor driving the rear axles furthers Volvo's commitment to becoming a fully electric carmaker by 2030.
"With these updates, we're addressing key factors of range and charging times for our customers," stated Javier Varela, COO and deputy CEO at Volvo Cars.
The single motor C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge feature a potent 248 hp e-motor, powered by an 82kWh battery pack. This allows an impressive 477 km and 471 km of range, respectively, on the EPA test cycle. Moreover, the upgraded 82 kWh battery pack permits rapid charging at a top rate of 200 kW DC, completing 10-80% state-of-charge in around 28 minutes.
Twin Motor all-wheel drive variants also benefit from these improvements. The in-house developed 255 hp electric motor on the rear axle and a new 147 hp asynchronous motor on the front work synergistically to extend the range. Notably, the asynchronous motor does not require constant electric charge, saving energy and further increasing range.
The Twin Motor models retain a 78kWh battery pack, with a top charging rate of 150 kW DC. This allows the XC40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD to reach up to 408 km, a 49 km increase. Meanwhile, the C40 Recharge Twin Motor now attains 413 km, an impressive leap from 364 km.
